Epic Games GEARS OF WAR for the Xbox 360 certainly lives up to the company’s name. Presenting an epic battle on another world, GEARS OF WAR runs on the Unreal Engine 3, the game engine designed for the UNREAL series of third-person shooter games, and like all Xbox 360 titles, the game is visually stunning. Players take on the role of soldier Marcus Fenix, who is stationed on the planet Sera along with his friend Dominic. His battalion is desperately trying to stop an alien locust-like horde that seems intent on destroying the human settlements of Sera. As the game progresses, Fenix and the player will learn more about these locusts and about the planet Sera. While GEARS OF WAR is certainly full of shooting action, the game also presents some interesting challenges. On one level, for example, if players stand in brightly lit areas, the locusts won’t attack them. To this end, players can actually push things like burning cars ahead of them to light up the area, keeping the locusts at bay. This is just one of the innovative ways players can actually avoid fighting in the game, which is sometimes the best strategy. Each of the game’s levels focuses on one or more missions of the unit, plus there are secondary goals players can elect to accomplish, as well. GEARS OF WAR’s fast-paced, action-packed sci-fi storyline is innovative and well-written, and when combined with the great graphics and gameplay, creates a nearly flawless game.
