East meets West in Samurai Western, a game for the PS2 by Altus Company. Samurai Western is the third in the Samurai series, but the first where the samurai heads out West. The story, set in the nineteenth century, follows Goujirou Kiryuu, who has warrior blood. Because of his family, he is conditioned to be a samurai from a young age. Yet things get crazy when Kiryuu heads out to the
wild West of America to find his brother. The storyline is fairly linear (played out in 15 stages), so much of the game focuses on the action. Players,
as Kiryuu, battle all sorts of bandits and cowboys in the search for his brother. In combat, Kiryuu can use a number of different slashing moves, as well as find objects to shield himself with. Also, players can choose from a variety of swords to use in combat. The game also includes a number of extras to keep the game exciting. For instance, players can unlock such comical items such as cowboy boots, bandanas, sunglasses, and afros. Also, the sound effects and music in the game are fun and quirky because they have a western feel (banjos and such) with an eastern edge. Samurai Western is a unique game to make the third in the series and gamers can enjoy the ride-em-cowboy fun of the
ol’ west as well as the sword-slashing combat of the samurai.
